You may think that you should cut out fat in your diet especially after the holidays,  but according to dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, it's essential to eat healthy fats for healthy skin, particularly in winter.

Dr. Bowe was recently on Good Morning America to offer tips on how to keep skin and hair hydrated during the winter.  She recommended adding olive oil to your diet for your health, but also using it in your skin care and beauty routine. For improvements in your skin, you could reach for a store bought product that contains fats such as ceramides and fatty acids, but you can actually make your own beauty products at home using olive oil.

Dr. Bowe recommends olive oil because it's naturally rich in Vitamin E and polyphenols and it's incredibly moisturizing, perfect for your dry skin woes in the winter. She also says that olive oil is better for your skin than coconut oil because it does not clog pores.

GMA Beauty Tip Mix oo with shimmer makeup - op

Dr. Bowe shared a tip on how to make the shimmery oils and creams that you see at the drugstore, at home by following these simple steps.

  • Pour some olive oil into a travel size bottle leaving some room at the top.
  • Take a shimmery eye shadow or highlighter, scrape a bit off, and break it apart with a fork on a piece of paper.
  • Use that paper as a funnel and put the powder into the bottle of olive oil, shake it up, and spread the mixture on your body.

And voila, you get a shimmery look to your skin while keeping your skin moisturized!

For extra hydration on your face, Dr. Bowe recommends mixing olive oil with a little moisturizer.
